In the beginning, God created all things, including the first man, Adam. He told Adam to do four things: cultivate the garden, keep it safe, eat the fruit from any tree but one, and name the animals. All this happened before God made the first woman, Eve, and she came on the scene.
As Adam did what God asked, he became aware that there was no one like him and no one to help him with the tasks given him. God states that it is not good for the man to be alone and creates a woman from Adam's own flesh. It was an exciting day for Adam to find someone like him, but different. Here is one he could partner with and become one with.
God tells them that they are made in His own image. They are like Him in that they have language, will and relationship. They are His representatives on Earth to rule and care for it. They mirror the unity within God Himself in the oneness they have together. Their origins are in God and they bring Him glory through their lives. They have value and dignity and worth because He has bestowed it upon them.
He gives them tasks: rule over the earth and subdue it and multiply and fill the earth with their offspring. God gives them everything they need and He says for the first time, "It is very good." God rests from creating.
Next in our shortened Bible history we see that the woman then gets fooled by the enemy of God, the serpent, and, Adam, who was right there with her when it happened (check Gen 3:6) said nothing, ate the forbidden fruit with her and then both of their eyes were opened. Innocence was lost, sin had entered the garden.
Their first reaction is shame and they make coverings for their naked bodies. Next comes fear and loss of perspective. They hide from God, as if that were possible.
God addresses the man, not both of them here. Adam answers from shame saying that he hid from God because of his nakedness. When God asks how he knew he was naked, Adam responds with first blame toward the woman and then toward God Himself. The woman then blames the serpent.
Their disobedience to God is high treason and is punishable by death, in this case, spiritual death immediately and to be followed by physical death. It also causes separation in relationship between Adam and Eve, shame, fear, distorted thinking, anger and blame shifting.
God proceeds to bring forth consequences for all.
The serpent is cursed, the woman is told she will have pain in childbirth and that she would now desire her husband in an unhealthy way. Adam is told that his labor to survive would now be hard and no longer will he have the same partnership with his wife but be a despot ruling over her.
In the midst of these consequences God brings a great promise. A Savior will come -
Adam now shows his faith in God's promise by naming his wife, Eve. Eve means "life." It is a statement of faith in God's promise of restoration.
God makes garments from skins showing that He is still caring for them and providing for their needs even after they have betrayed Him.
They have "become like God" and now know evil and good, and in God's mercy, He drives them from the garden for should they eat of the tree of life they would live forever in a state of spiritual death and separation from God.
Many years, generations, trials, wars, idolatries, and purgings later, the One promised to Adam and Eve and confirmed to Abram and David and through a series of prophets is born.
The One who would bring restoration, healing and destruction for Satan had come. God has become flesh, breaking into time and space to live among us and save us. For the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
He has humbled Himself, not coming as a king but a baby. Not coming as wealthy and greater than most, but as one of the many -
For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
cross and crown Adam and Eve brought spiritual death and then physical death into the world through sin. This sin was then passed down to every descendant -
There was no way for us to fix ourselves,we needed help.
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
When we believe that God has sent His Son to bring us back to Himself forever, that is called "faith." Faith is the way to claim the promise of being restored back to spiritual life. The death sin brought is overcome by the eternal life Christ brings through His death for us.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.
We can't earn our way back to God, we can only believe our way back through Christ. The first man, Adam, became a living soul. The last Adam became a life-
And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.
He is God in the flesh. And He is the image of the invisible God,the first-
And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the first-
Christ is restoring all things and that means that through Him we have a restored relationship with God and each other. That gets us back to the original design -
Originally they had the opportunity to live in sweet relationship with God, live in a world that they could rule and subdue (minus the thorns, painful childbirth and sin nature) and represent Him on the Earth -
Christ is restoring the sweetness of relationship with God for us today. He is restoring our relationships with one another as well. Men and women can again work together as Adam and Eve were instructed but now our work is about joining Christ in His work of restoration for all who want it.
The image of God is being restored in us but still has a warp to it due to our propensity to sin. It is that sin nature that cause us such problems in our relationships with God and each other and our ability to work together but we have help -
Christ lived as a human but never sinned. He fought against evil and won, He obeyed the Father every day and loved, and laughed and used His wisdom to live perfectly. This same Christ lives in us today. That means that we are never alone, never without His resources to know what to do and how not to sin. He is always there to love us and help us to live with victory. He tells us to: Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called.
And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach-
It has been a long road through thousands of years, as God worked out this plan from Adam to Christ to save us from ourselves and our common enemy. Now, in this age, with Christ present with us every moment we have a new capacity to love Him and the world that so desperately needs Him.
Now, what is left is to love God with all that we are,
thank Him daily for sending Christ,
live through His might and tell the good news
that restoration to God and healing are available
to all who want it.
From Adam to Christ to today, the promise of life with God continues.
